Detroit Tigers Baseball Blog http://www.tigershomeplate.com A blog about Detroit Tigers Baseball Mon, 11 May 2009 01:32:03 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.9.2 en hourly 1 A game without limits, win at any cost. http://www.tigershomeplate.com/a-game-without-limits-win-at-any-cost/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/a-game-without-limits-win-at-any-cost/#comments Mon, 11 May 2009 00:57:35 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=92 Baseball has created the monster of steroids. Free agency and high salaries empower the evil of fierce competition. Players are forced to use whatever means possible to stay above the competition, thus being awarded with a high salary. Players who are too old and can no longer trust their returns and resort to artificial energy sources. But baseball fails to see the error…The problem of steroids has been created by fans craving for the roundtripper, owners by greed, winning it all, players by egotism and a narcisstic desire to be the best and command high salaries. But every action causes an equal and opposite reaction. Records become meaningless.( the very fabric of baseball.)

The Tigers won today and sweep the series from Cleveland Central Division rivals . The Tiger’s pitching was supreme..Cleveland could only amount 3 runs in three games. Although it was a nail biter in the ninth inning when Rodney came in today’s game.

Porcello was masterful but in my opinion he needs more seasoning. He is raw talent. The hitting was light but timely, small ball type.I cannot understand why Leyland continues his passover of Brent Cleven. brent is a  solid right handed hitter and strong defensively. He would be a better call up than Ryan Rayburn.

SAVE THE GAME! http://www.tigershomeplate.com/save-the-game/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/save-the-game/#comments Sun, 19 Apr 2009 15:18:56 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=91 The more changes that are made to baseball the less the game will remain  a true sport. It will eventually disappear and become a distant memory. This is very evident in the game of today. Baseball has lost its luster. Steroids tarnish records, the DH rule is a disaster, Free agency is destroying baseball, Pitch counts are garbage,( Closers should only be used when the starting pitcher gets into trouble.) The CG has gone by the wayside as Documented by Tiger Pitching stars  of the past:Frank Lary, Jim Bunning, Denny Mclain, Mickey Lolich, Jack Morris and last but not least, Mark Fidrych…Players are swinging from their heels going for the fences…Fielding is a lost art..As a traditionalist,  Baseball has to stop making changes or cease to exist. The Tigers won two out of three from Seattle. Yesterday, Jackson was impressive. Leyland pulled Jackson too early he had a CG in the bag. Today a promising young pitcher beat Seattle and pulled after 7 innings. I agree with Leyland. You should protect young arms. Josh Anderson stole another base and had two hits. He is batting over .300…Santiago is a super sub..He had another stellar game…He had 5 RBI in the win today and he is batting above .320.

With Sheff gone we need a new cook… http://www.tigershomeplate.com/with-sheff-gone-we-need-a-new-cook/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/with-sheff-gone-we-need-a-new-cook/#comments Thu, 02 Apr 2009 00:20:31 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=89 In his day, Sheffield was one the best hitters in the majors. But his day has past lets move on. I am just sorry we paid so high a price for his tenure. Guillen would be an ideal DH, although I  hate the DH rule……Guillen could bat third or sixth. The speedy new guy, Josh Anderson is the perfect leadoff hitter. Steady, solid, good hit & run man, Polanco bats second.( I can not understand why Leyland does not hit & run ever)…Guillen or Granderson bat third. The franchise player, Cabrera would sit in the clean-up spot..The hit man, the amazing Ordonez would bat fifth. Thames, Thomas or Guillen would alternate batting sixth. Laird or Thames number 7. Inge would bat 8 and Everett would bring up the tail end and bat 9.

On the mound, I like Verlander, as number 1, followed by impressive Jackson as number 2, although I would like a southpaw, Willis would have been ideal but he needs paxil. Bonderman has problems too..Why does the Detroit pitchers all have anxiety disorders and suffer from a lack of confidence? (LEYLAND Pulls his pitchers too early!) They can bearly throw past the fifth inning. They are looking in the dug-out for Leyland to pull the plug. Mickey Lolich did 300 innings a year! Galarraga replaces injury prone Bonderman. Robertson goes fourth or fifth in the rotation if he is not traded. We need more pitchers! I like Rincon in the bullpen..I believe he has not allowed a run in ST..

THE D-TRAIN DERAILED joins Zoom, zoom on DL…..Bloom returned http://www.tigershomeplate.com/the-d-train-derailed-joins/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/the-d-train-derailed-joins/#comments Sun, 29 Mar 2009 18:50:53 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=88  The Tigers hope to pull closer to the 500 mark but rainy skys delay the start of the game between Detroit and Atlanta, today at Joker Marchant stadium ( which Detroit won(5-4, overall, 12-14) Polanco hit another homer, the new power hitter of the Tigers)….but the story on Willis is about over, he has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder (which is treatable, but discovered in his blood?, I never heard of this.) I hope he can recover he was such a good pitcher! If he could learn to focus and calm down..He needs to get the ball over the plate!

I guess Robertson wins the starting rotation by default, unless the Tigers decide to go with an all righty starting rotation.Bloom never rose to the occasion in a Tiger uniform, the lanky lefty was returned to the Pirates pretty touched up….

It is good to see the meat of our batting order back from The World Baseball Classic!I feel the WBC is not worth the effort! There is no reason why front line players need to play in the WBC…They need pratice to play against major league baseball players…Besides, we are paying them to play here not in WBC!

Lyon is shelled in City of Palms. http://www.tigershomeplate.com/lyon-is-shelled-in-city-of-palms/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/lyon-is-shelled-in-city-of-palms/#comments Thu, 26 Mar 2009 20:45:15 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=87 We are in sad shape if Lyon is our closer, the Bosox blasted four consecutive round-trippers off Lyon but we came back too lose only by one run, 7-6( We were down 7-0 at one point)

Jackson was outstanding….He will be in our starting rotation…I believe Bloom should be in the starting rotation..Robertson by default…Verlander and Bonderman are mainstays ( but I hope they bounce back) Willis is history….Gallarraga is fine trade material for a pure lefthanded hitter…

Greetings from Tigertown http://www.tigershomeplate.com/greetings-from-tigertown/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/greetings-from-tigertown/#comments Wed, 11 Mar 2009 13:47:37 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=86 The skys were sunny and blue over Joker Marchant….It was a winner of a day.  the Tigers did not return the favor, they went down in a hapless defeat to the Bronx Bombers,12-3. I realize half the team was away playing in the World Baseball Classic but that does not excuse such a devastating defeat…

The tigers have major problems…Guillen should be DH( for the record, I hate the DH rule) and bat third, forget left field. Sheffield should retire. Gomez should play Left field…He is the only pure left handed hitter aside from Timo Perez…We deperately need pure left handed bats in the lineup. Granderson and clete Thomas bat lefty but are right handed..not pure leftys. The only bright spot is a rookie by the name of Kelly, a player who deserves a watchful eye.

The pitching staff is another matter, we need a leader! Verlander needs to regain his form..He needs to throw hard! Bonderman would be my number two but he is a question mark…Jackson might replace Bonderman if Bonderman has shoulder problems. Willis is the biggest question???? He has lost his composure..He needs to throw strikes and throw hard I believe he can be the left handed Bob Gibson. Bob Gibson was all over the place with his windup, but he was always was around the plate. Robertson is in consistent, but we need two leftys…My starting rotation : Verlander, Bloom, Jackson, Robertson,Bonderman…Galaragga & Willis in pen.

Our bullpen can be overpowering if Zumaya can come back. Rodney is strong set up man but Who would be our closer? I like zumaya. Galarraga would be best in the pen he could be a closer too. This new guy, Lyon needs to prove himself…I hear he pitches like roller- coaster Jones. I have not seen Lyon pitch, therfore I will reserve judgement.

Overall, I predict the Tigers will be a 500 club in 2009…Jim Leyland will be gone after the frst two weeks!

Go Tigers! http://www.tigershomeplate.com/go-tigers/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/go-tigers/#comments Wed, 25 Feb 2009 22:34:46 +0000 Tanana http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=84 As a new kid on the blog, I offer my  experience as an avid Tiger fan….Although I was born in the Bronx….I have been a Tiger fan since 1961! The tigers won 101 games that year and finished second to the yankees. Norn Cash batted .361, Al Kaline and Rocky Colavito also pounded the raw-hide…Frank Lary, “the Yankee Killer” and Jim Bunning (who is now a senator from Kentucky) tore up the mound in  Old Tiger stadium.

But now a new year is upon us! Spring training is in full swing! It was a great day for baseball in Lakeland, a few white  puffy clouds in a Steel blue sky, temps in 70’s, green grass, freshly cut, and the Tigers beat  the Braves, the highpoint of the day….Adam Everett And Gerald Laird  hits were a bright spots for the  Tigers..Hello, my name is Joe and I will be Blogging with you this year!

Tigers trade for Edwin Jackson from the Tampa Bay Rays http://www.tigershomeplate.com/tigers-trade-for-edwin-jackson-from-the-tampa-bay-rays/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/tigers-trade-for-edwin-jackson-from-the-tampa-bay-rays/#comments Thu, 11 Dec 2008 15:03:13 +0000 Cliff http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=83 The Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays worked out a trade as the Winter meetings were coming to a close on Wednesday out in Las Vegas. The Tigers will be sending Matt Joyce down to Tampa in exchange for starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.

Jackson has great velocity on the ball but also lacks some command. The good thing is that Jackson is only 25 years old and has pitched the last couple of seasons in the major leagues so he will being a little bit of experience with him.

Joyce should get a crack at the starting lineup down in Tampa so I think it is a good trade for him as he would have been a fourth outfielder at best in the Tigers lineup.

Tigers and Adam Everett agree on one year deal http://www.tigershomeplate.com/tigers-and-adam-everett-agree-on-one-year-deal/ http://www.tigershomeplate.com/tigers-and-adam-everett-agree-on-one-year-deal/#comments Tue, 09 Dec 2008 15:15:26 +0000 Cliff http://www.tigershomeplate.com/?p=81 The Detoit Tigers signed infielder Adam Everett to a one year contract on Monday. Barring a medical issue, Everett will shore up the left side of the Tigers infield in 2009. The physical will be taking place on Tuesday and everything is expected to check out ok after Everett had surgery last year.

Everett hit .213 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in just 48 games of an injury-plagued 2008 season for the Twins. The one year deal is rumored to be worth $1 million plus some incentives.

Now management will turn their attention to signing a closer for the 09 season. J.J. Putz and Kerry Wood are at the top of their list.
