Will Rhymes started the game with an 11-pitch at bat, fouling off six offerings from Zack Greinke with two strikes. Rhymes was 0 for 4 before he hit a two-run triple in a four-run 11th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 9-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. "I felt like I had good at-bats all night but had nothing to show for it," Rhymes said.

The eighth-inning trip from right field was much less stressful than the one the 22-year-old Chapman took in 2009, when he defected from Cuba during a game in the Netherlands. Everyone, though, feels a few butterflies once they step onto the diamond. Or do they? As Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy stepped away from the plate after Chapman's second pitch, Lucroy knew there would be no debut jitters from this rookie.

The series finale between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins was about as ugly as it gets, until Gerald Laird and Jose Valverde finally put an end to a game that seemed like it was never going to finish.

Sluggish throughout a homestand opener against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night, the Minnesota Twins never needed their bullpen more. Matt Guerrier, Randy Flores, Jesse Crain and Matt Capps came through in a huge way for the Twins, showing perhaps the biggest reason they hold such a big lead over the Tigers with one month to play.
