Fans fondly remember broadcaster Harwell (The Canadian Press)

This 1950 photo provided by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, N.Y., shows Ernie Harwell broadcasting a ball game. Beloved by generations of baseball fans who grew up enraptured by his rich voice, Southern cadence and quirky phrases on the radio, Ernie Harwell died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, after a months-long battle with cancer. He was 92.

DETROIT – Hundreds of Detroit Tigers fans lined up outside Comerica Park early Thursday to give beloved broadcaster Ernie Harwell the send-off he wanted, paying their respects as they shuffled past his casket and swapping their favourite memories of the Hall of Famer.
