The Detroit Tigers are opening up the check book for third basemen Miguel Cabrera as they have signed him to an eight-year $153 million dollar extension.  The new contract will keep Cabrera with the Tigers through the 2016 season.  That is if he doesn’t eat himself off the team lol… Cabrera needs to keep the weight off and I then I don’t have any problem with the contract.

What do you all think Tigers fans?  Good contract for Miggy?

The Detroit Tigers have locked up Curtis Granderson through the 2013 season.  Granderson and the Tigers agreed on a new contract extension on Monday.  The extension will pay Granderson $1 million this year, $3.5 million in 2009, $5.5 million in 2010, $8.25 million in 2011 and $10 million in 2012.  They pay could go up based on all-star performances and post season awards.

Miguel Cabrera will be getting a pay raise for the 2008 season as he and the Detroit Tigers agree on a one year contract worth $11.3 million dollars.  The Tigers would like to lock up Cabrera with a long term deal, but they are really going to have to shell out some bigtime bucks to do that.  I would imagine around 15 million per season.

Tigers fans, do you agree with giving Cabrera 15 million per season for 5 years if he were to agree with that type of contract?

The Detroit Tigers have re-signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a one year contract for $1.275 million.  I wouldn’t expect much out of Thames right now unless there are injuries in the outfield for the Tigers.  At the most, Thames will be used as a pitcher hitter and platoon with Jacque Jones.  Hell he might even start over Jones as the season goes on.

Another option for the Tigers is to trade Thames and the season goes on.  There were a lot of reports that they have been trying to trade him during the offseason, and I don’t expect those rumors to go away.

Starting pitchers Nate Robinson and the Detroit Tigers have agreed on a three-year extension that will keep Robinson in Detroit through the 2010 season.  Robertson will reportedly earn $4.25 million in 2008, $7 million in 2009 and $10 million in 2010.

Pretty good pickup for the Tigers even though Robinson only went 9-13 last season..  I think a lot of people will ask about the $10 million in 2010, that is the gamble they had to take to lock him up for the next three years.

It’s going to be an exciting year for the Detroit Tigers with the additions of Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis.  Is anyone going to be able to stop the Tigers offense?  It’s going to be hard to do, and it looks like the Tigers are going to be the favorites in the American League Central Division.
