Max Scherzer responded quite nicely to his demotion. Scherzer struck out 14 in 5 2-3 shutout innings hours after he was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, helping the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 10-2 on Sunday to end a four-game losing streak. Scherzer allowed two hits, walked four and hit a batter in his first game since he was sent down following a rough opening stretch of the season.

Detroit Tigers starter Max Scherzer, called up earlier in the day, has struck out a career-high 14 batters in 5 2-3 innings against the Oakland Athletics. Scherzer was taken out of Sunday's game after striking out two batters in the fifth but also walking one and hitting another. The 14 strikeouts fall two short of Mickey Lolich's team record set in 1969.

The Detroit Tigers reliever Zach Miner will undergo season-ending surgery Friday to reconstruct a ligament in his right elbow. The Tigers say the 27-year-old consulted with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum, who'll perform the surgery in Los Angeles. Miner is expected to miss nine to 12 months. Miner was diagnosed two weeks ago with a partial ligament tear.
